Units and exam weighting

  1. Unit 1: Kinematics 10–15% of the exam
    Scalars and vectors, displacement, velocity and acceleration, representations of motion, reference frames, motion in two dimensions.
  2. Unit 2: Force and Translational Dynamics 18–23% of the exam
    Systems and centre of mass, forces and free-body diagrams, Newton's three laws, gravitational force, friction, springs, circular motion.
  3. Unit 3: Work, Energy, and Power 18–23% of the exam
    Translational kinetic energy, work, potential energy, conservation of energy, power.
  4. Unit 4: Linear Momentum 10–15% of the exam
    Momentum, impulse, change in momentum, conservation of momentum, elastic and inelastic collisions.
  5. Unit 5: Torque and Rotational Dynamics 10–15% of the exam
    Rotational kinematics, torque, rotational inertia, rotational equilibrium and Newton's first law in rotational form, Newton's second law for rotation.
  6. Unit 6: Energy and Momentum of Rotating Systems 5–8% of the exam
    Rotational kinetic energy, torque and work, angular momentum and impulse, conservation of angular momentum, rolling, orbits and satellites.
  7. Unit 7: Oscillations 5–8% of the exam
    Simple harmonic motion, frequency and period, representing and analysing SHM, energy in simple harmonic oscillators.
  8. Unit 8: Fluids 10–15% of the exam
    Internal structure and density, pressure, fluids and Newton's laws, buoyancy, conservation of mass flow rate, conservation of energy in fluid flow (Bernoulli).

How it works
