How this unit is tested

Development and learning questions on the AP exam almost always come as short scenarios: a child does something odd, a rat runs a maze, a teenager makes a moral choice. Your first job is to identify what type of question it is — a research design question (longitudinal vs. cross-sectional), a stage-identification question (Piaget, Erikson, Kohlberg), or a conditioning-analysis question (classical vs. operant vs. observational). Match the scenario's details to the theory's defining features rather than just its label. For conditioning questions, slow down and label each element before answering: is there an involuntary, reflex-like association forming between two stimuli (classical), or is a voluntary behavior being shaped by its consequences (operant)? If a behavior is copied from watching someone else with no direct reinforcement to the observer, it is social/observational learning. For schedules of reinforcement, ask whether the reward depends on a number of responses (ratio) or an amount of time (interval), and whether that number/time is fixed or variable. For the developmental theories, memorize each theorist's central claim in one sentence and the concrete evidence for it (Piaget's conservation tasks, Harlow's cloth-mother monkeys, Ainsworth's Strange Situation, Bandura's Bobo doll). The exam rewards students who can apply a stage or concept to a new example, not just recite the stage names in order. Finally, practice writing a one-line justification for every answer, since free-response questions on this unit typically ask you to apply a term to a scenario and explain why it fits — the explanation is graded as heavily as the label itself.

Classical conditioning (Pavlov)
An unconditioned stimulus (UCS) naturally triggers an unconditioned response (UCR). When a neutral stimulus (NS) is repeatedly paired with the UCS, it becomes a conditioned stimulus (CS) that triggers a conditioned response (CR) on its own.
Operant conditioning (Skinner)
Behavior is shaped by its consequences: reinforcement (positive = adding a stimulus, negative = removing a stimulus) increases the frequency of a behavior, while punishment (positive = adding a stimulus, negative = removing a stimulus) decreases it.
Schedules of reinforcement
Fixed-ratio: reward after a set number of responses. Variable-ratio: reward after an unpredictable number of responses (most resistant to extinction). Fixed-interval: reward for the first response after a set time. Variable-interval: reward for the first response after an unpredictable time.
Piaget's stages of cognitive development
Sensorimotor (birth–2, object permanence develops); Preoperational (2–7, egocentrism, lacks conservation); Concrete operational (7–11, conservation and logical thought about concrete objects); Formal operational (11+, abstract and hypothetical reasoning).
Erikson's psychosocial stages
Development proceeds through eight age-linked crises, each resolved along a spectrum from a positive to a negative outcome, e.g., trust vs. mistrust in infancy, identity vs. role confusion in adolescence, generativity vs. stagnation in middle adulthood.
Kohlberg's levels of moral development
Preconventional morality is based on avoiding punishment or gaining reward; conventional morality is based on social rules and approval; postconventional morality is based on self-defined, internalized ethical principles.

What people get wrong

  1. Treating 'positive' and 'negative' in operant conditioning as 'good' and 'bad.' Instead, remember positive means adding a stimulus and negative means removing one, regardless of whether the outcome is pleasant.
  2. Confusing classical and operant conditioning in a scenario. Instead, check whether the behavior is an involuntary reflex being paired with a new stimulus (classical) or a voluntary behavior being shaped by consequences that follow it (operant).
  3. Mixing up variable-ratio and variable-interval schedules. Instead, ask what determines the reward: number of responses (ratio) or elapsed time (interval); remember variable-ratio produces the highest, steadiest response rate and greatest resistance to extinction.
  4. Assuming Piaget's stage ages are rigid boundaries. Instead, identify the stage by the cognitive ability or limitation shown (e.g., lack of conservation, egocentrism), since exam scenarios test the behavior, not just the age.
  5. Confusing cross-sectional and longitudinal designs. Instead, check whether different people of different ages are tested once (cross-sectional, risks cohort effects) or the same people are tested repeatedly over time (longitudinal, risks attrition).
