How this unit is tested

Start by treating this unit as a toolbox: every later unit (population, culture, urbanization) reuses these five vocabulary sets, so exam questions rarely test them in isolation — they test whether you can apply them to a scenario. Read every stem for the specific geographic concept being tested (is this about scale, diffusion, or region type?) before looking at the answer choices, because AP distractors are usually correct-sounding terms from a neighboring concept. For maps and projections, always connect the technique to its purpose: a choropleth map exists to show data by area, an isoline map exists to show continuous surfaces like elevation or temperature, and every projection trades one kind of accuracy (shape, area, distance, direction) for another. Never memorize a projection's name without knowing what it distorts and what it is used for. For spatial concepts and human-environment interaction, practice building the vocabulary into full sentences about real places — 'Chicago's site is flat land near Lake Michigan; its situation is its position at the meeting point of eastern and western rail networks.' The exam rewards precise application over definition-reciting. Finally, drill scale and regions together, since they are the most confused pair on this unit: scale problems ask you to reason about what changes when you zoom in or out (cartographic scale, MAUP, gerrymandering), while region problems ask you to classify an area as formal, functional, or perceptual based on how its boundary is defined.

Cartographic scale ratio
Scale is expressed as a ratio (e.g., 1:24,000) between a distance on the map and the corresponding distance on the ground. A large-scale map (small ratio, like 1:10,000) shows a small area in great detail; a small-scale map (large ratio, like 1:1,000,000) shows a large area with less detail.
Distance decay
The interaction, similarity, or influence between two locations decreases as the distance between them increases.
Diffusion types
Relocation diffusion spreads an idea or trait through the physical movement of people who carry it. Expansion diffusion spreads a trait outward from its origin while it stays in the origin too, and includes contagious (spreads through direct contact, distance-based), hierarchical (spreads through a ranked order of places, e.g., large cities to small towns), and stimulus (the underlying idea spreads but is adapted locally) diffusion.
Environmental determinism vs. possibilism
Environmental determinism holds that the physical environment causes and limits human cultural development. Possibilism holds that the environment sets limits and offers opportunities, but humans choose how to adapt to and modify it using technology and culture.
Region types
A formal (uniform) region is defined by one or more shared traits present throughout the area. A functional (nodal) region is organized around a central node or point and defined by an activity or interaction that connects the area to that node. A perceptual (vernacular) region is defined by people's subjective sense of its identity or boundaries, which vary by individual.
Modifiable Areal Unit Problem (MAUP)
Statistical results and spatial patterns can change depending on how boundaries are drawn or how data is aggregated into units, even when the underlying data is unchanged; this makes the same data appear to show different patterns at different scales or with different boundary choices.

What people get wrong

  1. Thinking a 'large-scale' map covers a large area. It's the opposite: large-scale maps have a small ratio and show a small area in high detail, while small-scale maps cover large areas with less detail. Always check the ratio, not your intuition about the word 'large.'
  2. Confusing formal and functional regions because both can be drawn on a map with a boundary line. Ask what defines the region: a shared trait throughout the whole area (formal) or a connection to a central node (functional).
  3. Treating environmental determinism and possibilism as synonyms for 'humans are affected by environment.' The distinction is whether the environment dictates outcomes (determinism) or merely constrains options humans then choose among (possibilism) — AP questions test this exact contrast.
  4. Mixing up relocation diffusion with expansion diffusion. If the trait leaves its origin entirely and moves with migrating people, it's relocation; if it spreads outward while remaining at the source, it's expansion (contagious, hierarchical, or stimulus).
  5. Committing the ecological fallacy by assuming a pattern seen in aggregated area-level data (e.g., a choropleth map) applies to every individual within that area. Choropleth data describes averages or totals per unit, not guaranteed traits of every person inside it.
  6. Assuming GIS, GPS, and remote sensing are interchangeable. GPS provides location coordinates, remote sensing collects data from satellites or aircraft without ground contact, and GIS is the software system that layers and analyzes spatial data from these and other sources.
