What people get wrong
- Confusing the First, Second, and Third Agricultural Revolutions on the exam. Fix: memorize one distinguishing technology and one demographic consequence for each (domestication/sedentism; mechanization/urban labor supply; HYVs and chemicals/yield increase with input dependency).
- Reciting von Thünen's ring order without being able to apply the bid-rent formula to a new scenario. Fix: practice setting two rent functions equal and solving for the crossover distance, since AP scenario questions test application, not memorization.
- Treating von Thünen's model as a literal description of real farmland. Fix: always be ready to name which assumption is violated (uneven terrain, multiple markets, transportation infrastructure, government subsidies) when asked to critique the model.
- Mixing up cadastral survey systems with settlement patterns as if they were the same concept. Fix: keep them paired but distinct — metes and bounds often produces irregular/dispersed patterns, township and range produces a grid of dispersed farmsteads, and long lot produces linear settlement along a river or road.
- Assuming the Green Revolution was uniformly beneficial. Fix: always pair a yield-increase benefit with a specific cost (groundwater depletion, debt from input costs, loss of crop diversity, benefiting large landholders over smallholders).
- Calling any farming done outside a rich country 'subsistence agriculture.' Fix: check whether output is sold on the market (commercial) versus consumed by the farming household (subsistence) regardless of the country's income level.
